A lot of our customers seem to have a good source of there own wood to burn, so to make sure your wood burner runs to it full potential please follow our how to season wood guide. What is meant by seasoned wood is that the moisture content level should be below 20% this will increase the performance and and stove life of your log burner. Moisture meters can be purchased from us if you do need one.

          Here a list of tips

  • Green wood should be cut, split and stacked in a sheltered dry store with a good air flow after felling. Seasoning usually takes one or two years depending on the type of wood to reach the right moisture level of less than 20%. The best time to fell a tree is during the winter months as the sap moves to the roots of the tree.
  • Log stores help the seasoning process, but make sure they are in a sunny, dry and airy location the wind will help speed up the seasoning but please keep the log protected from any wet weather condition.
  • Once fully seasoned logs can be stored indoors for a few days prior to burning this will help dry them out a little bit more, Once you are ready to burn your seasoned logs then do a final check with the moisture meter to make sure you have the right moisture content. Another way to check the dryness of the logs is to see if the ends of the log has darkened in colour, radial cracks at the ends of the wood, and the weight of the log is a lot lighter once seasoned.
